Book Review: Ripper by Isabel Allende

How did I get the book?

I got this book by following my 2022 book challenge and my curiosity to try another audiobook.  I needed a book that started with “R” and oh my, the Ripper from Isabel Allende did not disappoint. Narrated by Edoardo Ballerini, this book kept me on my toes, first by the intricate, complicated, and simple lives of its protagonist and my effort to try to understand the murders in the plot, but then once all is unraveling, I was consumed by the suspense of the plot until the very end.

The book has a staggering 3.8-star rating out of 5 with over more than 500 reviews, which is impressive.

About the Author

I have read several novels by Isabel Allende, my first novel was “The House of the Spirits” and I loved it.  The second one was “Paula” and is still the saddest book I have ever read.  It was beautiful, hopeful, sad, and loving.

About the Book

As taken from Amazon the premise of the book is:

“The Jackson women, Indiana and Amanda, have always had each other. Yet, while their bond is strong, mother and daughter are as different as night and day. Indiana, a beautiful holistic healer, is a free-spirited bohemian. Long divorced from Amanda’s father, she’s reluctant to settle down with either of the men who want her—Alan, the wealthy scion of one of San Francisco’s elite families, and Ryan, an enigmatic, scarred former Navy SEAL.

While her mom looks for the good in people, Amanda is fascinated by the dark side of human nature, like her father, the SFPD’s Deputy Chief of Homicide. Brilliant and introverted, the MIT-bound high school senior is a natural-born sleuth addicted to crime novels and Ripper, the online mystery game she plays with her beloved grandfather and friends around the world.

When a string of strange murders occurs across the city, Amanda plunges into her own investigation, discovering, before the police do, that the deaths may be connected. But the case becomes all too personal when Indiana suddenly vanishes. Could her mother’s disappearance be linked to the serial killer? Now, with her mother’s life on the line, the young detective must solve the most complex mystery she’s ever faced before it’s too late.”

My Personal Opinion:

I enjoyed reading this book a lot. In my opinion, the book is a solid 4.4 out of 5. I really enjoyed how each character was developed slowly and thoughtfully.  As the plot evolved you could see the importance of each character in the story. It kept me so intrigued all the way until the end, until the very end.

Quotes from “Ripper” by Isabel Allende

“His house of cards had collapsed, and he lay among the ruins—but he was free. He felt euphoric, weightless, years younger. The only thing he missed was Indiana, but she too belonged to the past; she too had been carried off by the wind.”

Isabel Allende, The Ripper

“Indiana was such a devout disciple of Shakti that she had once considered taking her name until her father, Blake Jackson, managed to convince her that a Hindu goddess’s name was not appropriate for a tall, voluptuous blond American with the looks of an inflatable doll.”
