Book Review: The Near Witch by V. E. Schwab

How did I get the book?

I got this book by following my 2022 book challenge. I was looking for a book that started with the letter “N” and I also have been wanting to try Audiobooks but have always felt that it would be hard for me to follow the plot of the story. So I picked a Young Adult Fantasy and it was the perfect pick! My first Audiobook was a success.

The book has a staggering 4.3-star rating out of 5 with over more than 1,100 reviews, which is impressive.

About the Author

This is my third book written by V.E. Schwab and is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. She has written over 15 books and I cannot wait to read all of them. My first book was “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” and is on my top 10 books.

About the Book

As taken from Amazon the premise of the book is:

“The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

There are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger, a boy who seems to fade like smoke, appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.”

My Personal Opinion:

I enjoyed reading this book a lot. In my opinion, the book is a solid 4.7 out of 5.

I loved the Near Witch! It was suspense, romance, innocence, magic, innocence, and fear. I really enjoyed the characters especially Lexi, the main character.  This book warmed my heart and soul in a very unexpected way and I am oh so grateful for that.

Quotes from “The Near Witch” by V.E. Schwab

“Everything seems different at night. Defined. Beyond the window, the world is full of shadows, all pressed together in harsh relief, somehow sharper than they ever were in daylight.
Sounds seem sharper,too, at night. A whistle. A crack. A child’s whisper.”

V.E. Schwab, The Near Witch

“The morning is a stealthy hunter, my father used to say. It sneaks up quiet and quick on the night and overtakes it.”

V.E. Schwab, The Near Witch
