Book Review: The Dressmaker’s Gift by Fiona Valpy

How did I get the book?

I got this book because I wanted to read a historical fiction book. It was free with my Amazon Prime subscription.

The book has a staggering 4.4-star rating out of 5 with over more than 35,000 reviews, which is truly impressive. I read the book in Ebook format.

About the Author

This is Fiona Valpy’s sixth novel following and she has written more than four additional books, which are between historical and contemporary fiction.

About the Book

As taken from Amazon and Goodreads the premise of the book is:

“In wartime, the three seamstresses face impossible choices when their secret activities put them in grave danger. Brought together by loyalty, threatened by betrayal, can they survive history’s darkest era without being torn apart?”

My Personal Opinion:

I enjoyed reading this book a lot. In my opinion, the book is a solid 4.5 out of 5.

I liked the way the story narrates and incorporates the lives of three seamstresses facing impossible choices. Choices that show strength, resilience, sadness, fear, and hope during World War II. I really liked how their story, two generations later, touches the lives of their descendants.

It was truly interesting too to know about the Resistance of the French people during the Nazi invasion. It was a perspective I was not familiar with and how the underground efforts against the Nazis were dangerous but incredibly necessary against the Nazis.

This book was written with great compassion and a true understanding of how war can change the people we know the most, the people we trust, and ourselves.

  1. I’ve read a few Fiona Valpy books now and I’ve loved them all. I finished The Storyteller of Casablanca a week ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it! I’ve not read this one yet but it’s on my TBR pile.
