Book Review: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

How I got the book?

I got this book from a Book Club as the monthly reading.  I honestly did not know anything about the author, plot, trilogy, absolutely nothing so it has been the best surprise to read this book.  Also, this was my second book through a Book Club and I was so impressed with how good I have been with the book selection. I think I would have never picked up this book as it was under my radar, but now I am in for the whole trilogy!

What is the book about?

As taken from Amazon and Goodreads the main storyline of the book is:

“Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.  Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all”

The book takes place in a world where magic and religion strongly collide with the Church having a strong witch hunt mentality and in which the Chasseurs (from the Church) are trained to witch hunt (and kill) witches which are seen as abnormal terrifying beings.

My Personal Opinion:

I loved this book. Was an amazing surprise from the getgo! The story is narrated from Lou and Reid’s perspective and you can see how their feelings change, their beliefs get tested, their love flourishes.

I loved this book. Was an amazing surprise from the get-go! The story is narrated from Lou and Reid’s perspective and you can see how their feelings change, their beliefs get tested, and their love flourishes.  The main character’s personalities are completely different, but within its difference, there is a constant from which true love can bloom, kindness and longing to find their place in this world.  In their contradictory worlds, their kindness and longing sip through in a tangible way and we the reader can feel it.

Another treat in this book is the characters, they are well defined from their very introduction and we can see their place and importance in the plot.  The main characters’ back story is exactly what, we the reader, needs to know to understand how their lives are so vastly different, but so very lonely at the same time and how that loneliness so strongly connects them.

The Highlights of the Book:

The plot, the magic, the characters, the secrets revealed, it all just merged into a great love story in which you realized that family is not necessary those who gave you life, but those you chose to love. Lou’s character is perfection in every way, she is realist, and sarcastic, and witty, and so incredibly loyal, kind, and tender.    I can’t wait to start on books number 2 and 3!.

The Negatives:

Sorry, but I cannot find a flaw in this book.  I just 100% loved it!.
