The road to a healthy lifestyle… when you are turning 40!

I am a few weeks of turning 40 years old and my journey to my “ideal weight” has been an uphill battle all the way up.

When I was in my teens I was what is called in very good shape. I did taekwondo, I watched what I ate, and my father was an avid runner, so that kept the household into a more active and healthy lifestyle. When I was 17 I got into a pretty bad car accident and during my long period of not being able to move, my diet was restricted in a way to keep a balanced weight (which consisted of steamed broccoli and grilled chicken for about 8 months…). And then came college, the usual “freshman 15” was more like a “freshman 30”, and from that point on the battle to be in my ideal weight started.  After two pregnancies and countless of yo-yo diets, my weight went up and down until I was 34 years old. I was able to stick to a diet plan and finally reach my ideal weight… I was indeed a happy camper.

However, even though I reached my goal something was not right, because the road to achieving my goal was just unbearable. I was calorically deprived and overly tired from constant rigorous exercise, and in the minute that I reached my goal, I knew that… 

  1. I could not keep counting calories forever.
  2. I could not keep running miles after miles to keep my metabolism moving.

So as the scale kept going up in numbers,  I realized I needed to find an alternative that 

  1. Will let me eat food that I wanted 
  2. Will not give me a 1-hour killer workout routine 5 times a week

So I started looking around to the next best alternative and that search has continued until today. My husband, who is following a very good healthy lifestyle, mentioned Intermittent Fasting. So I did some research and the information was very conclusive about its benefits. It sounded like an amazing alternative, but I felt that everyone had a way of “fasting” and how to break the fasting or when to break the fasting was not really a common answer.

  1. Wow interesting read! I always avoided eating late though the place I am from has this culture of eating huge meal at a very late evening! I always wondered what they are upto and how they are still healthy 😂😂 seems like I need to unlearn those myths 😂 thanks a lot for sharing.

    • This is so true!!! When we travel to another country is very often when dinner is past 8 PM and am always petrified… but with this new lifestyle, I am learning to enjoy dinner with the family!!

  2. 40 is around the corner for me! And I’ve always struggled with trying to keep the weight off during off season from sports. But I did try IF and it worked for me! Unfortunately I didn’t have the strong will power to continue due to external factors. So I am at the gym when I can and trying to limit my intake. It’s not easy but it’s possible! 😊

    • It is definitely hard to keep the same eating habits when everything around you is in constant change!!! The gym is great and limitation is also awesome!


  3. This is so uplifting, I’m often caught between the urge to start gym or wish for a less exhausting alternative. After pregnancy I’ve been struggling to get my slim figure back.


  4. This is fascinating because I had always heard that it’s healthier to eat more earlier in the day and less in the evenings. But it’s true that I am naturally hungrier in the evenings! I am adding this book to my ‘to be read’ list as I would like to check it out! x


    • Yes, it takes a bit to skip on the breakfast, but is more than a mental challenge than a hunger challenge (at least for me), but yes, not going to bed with my belly making noises is a good thing in deed!

      • I admit I do love my breakfast, but I think if I ate late at night I wouldn’t be so hungry in the morning, so I wouldn’t mind skipping it. Especially if I knew I could look forward to a big meal later in the day.
